A
young woman who suffers from disturbing visions becomes the target of an evil
vampire who's obsession with her leaves a trail of terror and death in it's
wake.
Robert
Eggers gives us a movies that is visually stunning. The costumes and sets are
wonderful too. Sadly though there's little else here to keep me interested. The
performances range from very good, Williem DaFoe is his usual excellent self as
the Van Helsing style character. Lily-Rose Depp is also decent in some scenes,
but in many others her way over the top overacting just look plain silly and
just makes me laugh which i'm sure is definitely not what they were going for.
Bill Skarsgard plays Count Orlok and I'm really not a fan of this creation. Not
his fault, just the whole look of the count is just not scary, he just comes
across as a strange old man and not some ancient, evil creature. The choice to
have him say pretty much every line in a slow, drawn out way becomes very
annoying very fast. The film does have some good moments and a couple of fun
gory scenes, but overall it's slow moving, not very scary or atmospheric and I
found myself getting quite bored around the halfway mark. I will admit that the
final shot of the dead count lying on top of Elien was fantastic and easily my
favourite shot of the film, just a shame we couldn't have had more of that
throughout. Overall not a bad movie by any means but not one I'll be going back
to very often. I'll take the 1922 original or the 1979 Herzog version of this
everytime.
