H.P. Lovecraft searches for the book The Necronomicon and eventually finds it being guarded by some monks. After being granted some time to read it he copies three stories but little does he know the monks are secretly watching his every move.

Story one "The Drowned" involves a man whos wife is killed in a car accident. After moving into an old family hotel he's inherited he uses the necronomicon to perform a ritual to bring her back to life. The ritual works but what comes back is very dangerous. A fun story with some really good practical effects

Story two called "The Cold" is about a reporter who's looking into a series of unsolved murders that have taken place of the course of a few decades. After his investigation leads him to an old apartment building he's invited in by a woman who keeps her apartment cold due to a rare illness. Once inside the truth soon becomes clear but it may be too late for him to leave. My favourite of the three stories, this is often quite creepy and is topped off with some pretty gory pratical effects. David Warner is excellent as always, as is Bess Meyer as Emily and Millie Perkins as Lena.

The final story "Whispers" is about twe police officers Paul & Sarah who are searching for a serial killer known as The Butcher. After getting themselves involved in a car crash Paul goes missing and Sarah follows the trail of blood only to find herself trapped in a hellish nightmare involving strange creatures. Not a bad story, it's filled with lots of gory practical effects and a couple of good scares. My least favourite of the three but still worth a look.

The wrap around story starring Jeffrey Combs (under heavy makeup) as Lovecraft is decent and also has some good effects to help it along. Overall it's a fairly good anthology and if you're a fan of this type of movie then you'll want to check it out.
